Unemployment low, nursing demand high

Hancock County’s unemployment rate for November 2024 was 3.6%, according to a Labor Market Review recently released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
The county’s rate is up slightly from 3.4% in October 2024 and nearly a point from November 2023’s 2.7%.
Indiana is on a similarly upward trajectory, with an unemployment rate of 4.2% in November 2024, up from 4% in October 2024 and 3.2% in November 2023.
The U.S. unemployment rate for November 2024 was 4%, up slightly from October 2024’s 3.9% and November 2023’s 3.5%.
Hancock County’s November 2024 figure ranked 71st highest out of Indiana’s 92 counties. For a nine-county central Indiana region that includes Hancock County, Madison County’s 4.2% was highest (and 37th highest in the state), while Hamilton County’s 3.3% was lowest (and 89th highest in the state).
The report delves into employment trends regarding specific lines of work as well, and professions in nursing notably make up three of the top five job listings by number of openings in the nine-county central Indiana region.
Providing education and training for medical professions as well as myriad others in order to fill employment gaps is one of the key motivations for Amplify Hancock. The 100,000-square-foot career and vocational center is under construction in Hancock County and slated to start welcoming high school and adult learners in 2026.
