Hancock County is now the third healthiest county in Indiana, according to the U.S. News & World Report.

The county also ranks 117th in the nation–out of 3,200 counties–placing it in the top 4%.

Hancock County’s 2024 ranking represents a rise from fourth healthiest county in the state last year.

U.S. News & World Report uses multiple factors to calculate its rankings, including:

  • Population health
  • Equity
  • Education
  • Economy
  • Housing
  • Food and nutrition
  • Environment
  • Public safety
  • Community vitality
  • Infrastructure

Looking at the aspects used to determine the rankings, it’s easy to see why Hancock County fared so high. Residents in and around the county receive excellent healthcare from Hancock Health, with a hospital in Greenfield, clinical and wellness facilities throughout the county, and its membership in the Mayo Clinic Care Network–a carefully vetted group of independent health systems granted special access to Mayo Clinic’s knowledge, expertise, and resources.

Hancock County also offers several annual events that promote physical health, like the Hancock Flat 50 cross-county bike ride, and the McCordsville Path to Fitness 5K Run/Walk. When it comes to educational health, the county boasts four consistently top-rated K-12 school districts. Additionally, being the fastest growing county in Indiana in 2023 surely had an impact on its impressive economy, housing, community vitality, and infrastructure health scores.
