The Hancock County Council unanimously approved the adoption of the county’s 2025 budget at its October 9 meeting following months of negotiation.
The final budget totaled levying $84,169,659 in taxes to adopt a tax rate of 0.3801. The budget included $28,436,544 in home-ruled funds, which are not reviewed by the Department of Local Government Finance. Home-ruled funds are funds that have a specific funding source and purpose, such as grants and specific programs such as jury pay. That left the county’s main funds it draws from for actions throughout the year with a budget of $55,733,115. The county’s general fund, from which it pays most expenses, will be $28,001,691 in 2025. Council president Jeannine Gray said she felt that early preparation allowed this year’s budget process to be the smoothest one she’s overseen during her time on the council.
