“Why do I need to know this?”

It’s not uncommon to hear this question from students, as representatives of a Hancock County school corporation attested recently.

At Eastern Hancock Schools, students are seeing answers to that question as an initiative continues to prepare them for bright futures with local employers. Officials updated the community on those efforts at a Community & Family Engagement (CAFE) meeting at the Thrive Center on Tuesday.

A panel of local employers at the event discussed how they’ve successfully engaged with Eastern Hancock students. Two of the panelists hailed from an electrical and mechanical contractor whose partnership with the school corporation has morphed into an actual program at the high school.

Diana Arellano, Work-Based Learning Coordinator at Eastern Hancock Schools, leads a panel discussion at a CAFE meeting.

Additionally, Eastern Hancock High School has launched a new curriculum to engage students in hands-on business development, and the young learners are already pursuing solutions to problems through the power of entrepreneurship.

Seniors at the high school undergo a unique exit interview process as they prepare for future endeavors, and employer and community partners will have the opportunity to provide feedback as the school corporation continually improves that process.

They’re just some of the ways education providers are working tirelessly to make Hancock County an excellent place to grow a business. The Hancock Economic Development Council is honored to be a part of this engagement and delighted to see so many local employers part of it too. The HEDC looks forward to the positive results that will continue to stem from these efforts.
