In the heart of Hancock County, where health and hope intersect, Dr. Mieasha Hicks Barksdale has become more than just a foot and ankle surgeon—she's a transformative force in her community. As a trailblazer in medicine and an inspiration to aspiring black professionals, Dr. Barksdale's practice represents her passion, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to those she serves.

Finding Her Path

Dr. Barksdale always knew she wanted to pursue a medical career, but initially, the “how” wasn't clear until she entered a master's program in biomedical science. With the guidance of a mentor who encouraged her to explore podiatry, Dr. Barksdale discovered a field that perfectly aligned with her desire to make a tangible difference in people's lives.

"I was in awe of the multitude of subspecialties this career had to offer," Dr. Barksdale reflects. "I was even more drawn in once I discovered the surgical side! What better way to help people than to keep them up and on their feet?" Her grandmother's wisdom, "When your feet hurt, your whole body hurts," resonated deeply with her, fueling her passion to become a foot and ankle surgery specialist.

A New Beginning in Hancock County

After practicing in central and southern Indianapolis for six years, Dr. Barksdale faced a non-compete clause that prevented her from working within 15 miles of any office she'd previously worked at. This situation forced her to explore new opportunities in different cities and counties.

Born and raised in Ohio, the potential areas outside Indianapolis were foreign to her. Though unfamiliar with the area, initially, she was drawn to Greenfield, a community with growth potential and a positive atmosphere that felt like the perfect place to start anew.

"The icing on the cake was being near a local Boys & Girls Club," Dr. Barksdale shares. "The organization has been near and dear to me, and one with which I have been very involved over my lifetime." This connection to the Boys & Girls Club and the supportive community atmosphere solidified her decision to establish her practice, Foot and Ankle Specialists of Indiana, in Hancock County.

Overcoming Challenges

Dr. Barksdale has faced her share of challenges as a black doctor in a specialized field. From proving her expertise to navigating the skepticism surrounding her decision to open a new practice, she has encountered obstacles that could have deterred a less determined individual. However, Dr. Barksdale's faith and unwavering commitment to her goals have carried her through these challenges.

"I take time to be thorough with everything I do," she says. "This, in turn, opens up more individuals to trust my expertise and training." Her resilience and dedication have helped her overcome these challenges and build a successful practice in Hancock County, exemplifying her skills and determination.

A Legacy of Giving Back

Dr. Barksdale's commitment to her community extends far beyond her medical practice. Her partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Hancock County is a natural extension of her mission to give back and inspire the next generation. "My practice foundation is built on strong morals such as integrity, commitment, dedication, caring, and giving," she explains. Through her involvement, she hopes to be an example of perseverance and show young people they can overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.

In addition to her work with the Boys & Girls Club, Dr. Barksdale is a member of Jack & Jill of America, Inc., The Circle City Chapter, an organization of mothers dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty. Her involvement in these national initiatives reinforces the importance of community, partnership, and giving back—values at the core of her practice and her life's work.

Inspiring the Next Generation

When asked what advice she would give to aspiring black medical professionals, Dr. Barksdale's message is clear: "Never give up on your passion, vision, or dreams. You can make a difference and change lives. Keep pushing through all the adversity and challenges; it will be well worth it."

Her journey is a powerful reminder of one person's impact on a community. Through her dedication to her patients, involvement in local and national initiatives, and unwavering commitment to giving back, she is healing feet and leaving a lasting footprint on the hearts and minds of those she serves. Dr. Barksdale is making a difference in Hancock County and beyond, one step at a time.
