Cumberland

Cumberland is a progressive community on the far west side of Hancock County. The Town of Cumberland was established in 1831 along the National Road. Cumberland's development over the years has been largely related to the advances in transportation. Cumberland has a thriving business community and has retained its small town charm, while providing the conveniences of being located adjacent to Indianapolis.

The Town of Cumberland and City of Indianapolis have established an historic conservation district protecting much of the historical core of the community. Prior to the local designation, the district received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places. The Town is very proud of its National Road heritage and has adopted an overlay district to guide development along the historic national road.

In 2009, a Streetscape/US 40 Road reconstruction project on Washington Street will begin construction that will dramatically improve Cumberland's main street corridor. In addition, in 2009 the Town will begin construction of the Cumberland Pennsy multi-modal trail that will become a part of the National Heritage trail system that runs from Richmond to Terre Haute. This is only the first phase of a Town wide system that will connect the entire town to this statewide system.
